In September 2015, months before Google got around to blocking Flash content altogether, it promised to auto-pause Flash content that wasn’t central to the website you were visiting. This was largely an effort to phase out the deprecated web multimedia standard, but improvements to the b-word were mentioned during the announcement. In May 2016, the browser maker announced plans to start blocking most Flash content within Chrome. It didn’t specify precisely what those improvements were, but it included a video showing how looping a HD video from Vimeo resulted in two hours more battery life in Chrome 53 compared to Chrome 46. In August 2019, Microsoft’s move to the Chromium browser engine started to pay dividends when its engineers figured out a way to save battery life by giving users the option to turn off the caching of streaming media. In December 2019, Google said it was working on “tab freezing”, a feature that will pause inactivity from tabs that you’re not using to improve, well, you know. In May 2020, the company announced that “Chrome will limit the resources a display ad can use before the user interacts with the ad”, in “order to save our users’ batteries”.
